Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther because he was considered a heretic when, Martin Luther drew up his 95 Theses. Three Months later he was asked to defend his beliefs in front of the Edict of Worms. When Luther refused to take down the writings, Luther was to be outlawed and died in 1546.
