Martin Luther was called before the Edict of Worms in 1521 by the Roman emperor Charles V for crimes of heresy. The Edict of Worms was the princes of the Roman Empire. He was ordered to revoke his writings and teachings. He refused. The Edict declared him an outlaw and was sentenced to death. He was spared when Frederick the Wise kidnapped him and put him into hiding. He hid in a castle at Wartburg for eleven months. While he was there he started to translate the bible from Latin to German.
